The most common use for these pulls is on antique furniture, but some people also choose an antique style for their kitchen or bathroom cabinets. Whatever the reason for selecting antique drawer pulls, there are a number of things that must be considered before a decision is made. It is important to realize that there are many different periods that are considered antique, and even within this wide range of styles there will still be plenty of decisions to make. Most antique pulls are made of metal, and it is rare to find any that are made of other materials. Glass might also be coming onto the antique drawer scene now, but metal is still the predominant material. However, the metal that was used to make antique drawer pulls may be different than the metal that is used in pulls today. Here are some other things that will be very helpful to understand the process of shopping for antique pulls.
Style
While you might think that the style of the antique drawer pulls has already been selected, remember that antique covers many different styles over many centuries. For example, remember to take into account the size of the hardware and the size of the drawer. This is especially important with antique drawer pulls because often the more ornate patterns can take up quite a bit of space on the drawers. In some cases it may be a good idea to find hardware that comes in several different sizes. This way it will be a lot easier to match the size of the drawer with the size of the hardware in a proportional way.
In addition to proportions, also remember that some antique pulls look very dainty and small. These smaller pulls may not look great on very large, clunky drawers. The size of the hardware should make it look like it belongs on the drawer. It may help to measure the size of the drawer's face and then measuring the size of the drawer pull before making a decision. Do not forget to factor in the size of the base pieces of the hardware because that is what can really make the hardware mesh well with the drawer.
