How to Be a Success at This Game We Call Life or, The Beginners Guide to Gratitude

Some people are just happy, have you noticed? They don't seem to get bogged down in the mire of day to day life in the same way as the rest of us. Somehow, they just seem to notice that the glass is half full. Due to this attitude, many of them are judged as "idealistic" or worse, "unrealistic" because of it. It shouldn't be this way. We should all strive to be like them because, I can promise you, their blood pressure is lower, their lives are more rewarding, they have more laughter in each day and they are more well balanced than most.
So, what is the trick? What is it that they do that the majority of us don't? I believe that these individuals have the innate ability to see the best in their lives and to be grateful for it. And I think that is the simple answer, it is what we must all do: Look for the best in our lives and be grateful. Marvellous, I hear you think, so how am I, who is overworked/underpaid/sick/unhappy/etc supposed to do that? It isn't as difficult as you might think.
Gratitude and a positive outlook is a skill. Just like other skills, it can be learned. I can play the piano - not brilliantly, but I can knock out a bit of a tune, because I learned to do it. I can't catch a ball however, because I didn't bother to learn. I am a great public speaker, because I learned how but my ability with the bag pipes can make a grown man cry! Being grateful can be learned in just the same way - by developing and nurturing the things that are necessary to grow the skill. However, has been ignored by most in just the same way as my bag pipe practice...
So, how do we do it? I have three tips for you:
Develop an attitude of gratitude. Take two minutes at the end of each day to think of two things that went well today. If you are a lifelong pessimist, start small. Maybe you had a really great cup of coffee, or your cat spent a whole five minutes purring on your lap. Perhaps you heard a song from way back when that made you smile, or you saw a small child skipping down the street. Whatever it was, bring it to mind, think about it, remember how it made you feel and be grateful.
Write it down. Once you are in the habit of thinking of two good things each night, write them down. I mean literally. Get a notebook, write the date and write down your two things. Once you start thinking about what things went well, or made you happy each day, you will find that slowly but surely, you notice more. Writing them down means that you can use this list of "happy stuff" to remind you of what you have to be grateful for when life kicks you in the teeth.
Use the written list of happy stuff. Just as mentioned in the tip above - use this list. Think about it when you have a spare moment each day. You will find that you have more and more of those moments when your mind wanders to good things.
Those three tips constitute the Beginners Guide to Gratitude and will, if you practice diligently, make your life a little sunnier, really quickly.
