Celebrating National Ice Cream Sundae Day

by Stephen Kelly

The third Sunday in July is Ice Cream Sundae Day. The perfect time of year to splurge on excessive calories with something sweet and cold! Celebrating this holiday is easy. All you need is some ice cream and people to eat it.

Technically, it's National Ice Cream Day rather than National Ice Cream Sundae Day. The whole month of July was designated as National Ice Cream Month by Ronald Reagan. In 1984, President Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by a full 90% of the nation's population. In the proclamation, President Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."(Reference: IDFA). What better way to observe and celebrate National Ice Cream Day than by having an Ice Cream Sundae Party?!

I scream, you scream, we all scream for... you know! Picking out a great flavor of ice cream and enjoying it on a hot day must be one of the greatest memories of any person's childhood. This is a tradition meant to be passed down from one generation to the next.

Sharing ice cream with the family is a bonding experience. You have so many options when it comes to how, when and where you will consume the treat. A trip to the ice cream parlor is perfect if you want to get out on a nice summer day and mingle with other ice cream lovers. Another option is to get a Grab n' Go Party Kit and celebrate in the comfort of your own home. Usually these kits include everything you need for a party of 5 (1 Quart of ice cream, Hot Fudge, Whipped Cream, 2 Dry toppings, Bowls, spoons, napkins, Ice Cream Scoop). A quart of ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream, a couple dry toppings, bowls, spoons, napkins and even an ice cream scoop are commonly found in the party kit. These kits are great and they help to eliminate the guessing game of what to serve at your small family gathering. You also don't have to worry about buying too many bowls or spoons, you have just enough to get you through.

Share the traditional and universal love for ice cream with your children so that they know just how important National Ice Cream Month is and can pass it down to generations to come.
