Candle Making Crafts - A Quick and Easy Canning Jar Candle

Home made decorative candles are nice accents for your own home and also make wonderful presents for friends. A great candle making crafts project is to combine ordinary votive candles and canning jars to make uniquely attractive candles.
This project has several things to recommend it. For one, it is highly adaptable. By changing the type of decorations you use you can create candles appropriate for any season or occasion.
For another, is very economical. Even if you buy new canning jars, they're very expensive. Better yet, you probably have some jars at home that you can use for free.
I have some jars from purchased jam that were too pretty to throw away. I eventually used to make candle holders. You can also find jars for next to nothing at flea markets and yard sales.
You'll find inexpensive plain votive candles and glass holders for them at discount stores. With this project, you'll turn these rather humble components into something delightful.
The secret is in the decorations. That's what changes something rather ordinary into something unique.
The basic idea with this project is to partially fill the canning jar with decorative material and then placing a votive candle within it. The material makes the holder attractive even when the candle isn't lit.
The outside of the canning jar can be a decorated as well. One of the simplest ways is to just tie a ribbon and bow around the top. If you want to make a bit more elaborate you could paint designs or patterns on the outside of the jar or glue decorative items on the jar.
I've seen candles of this type that almost appeared as if they were stained glass when the votive was lit.
Any number of materials can be used to fill the bottom of the canning jar. A common one is to use potpourri. This is not only visually attractive, but it adds the aroma of the potpourri as well. You can accept it even more by using a votive with a compatible fragrance. Another tip is to refresh the potpourri periodically by adding a drop or two of essential oil.
Since you may be using somewhat flammable material in the bottom of the canning jar, it is essential that the votive candle is inside its own glass holder. Do not use a votive candle or a tea candle without a glass holder.
It is a good idea to not let the decorative material come up above the bottom of the votive holder and to extinguish the candle before it burns completely to the bottom. And as always, never leave the room with a candle burning.
You can use materials besides potpourri to fill the bottom of the jar. As always, the choice is limited only by your imagination.
For example, one idea is to create miniature beach scene by putting sand in the bottom of the jar and placing miniature seashells and pieces of "driftwood" on the surface around the votive candle. Glass beads are another good choice - all one color or a wild mix.
