Moving The Pack Rats Worst Nightmare

by William Gold

For a certain kind of personality, moving presents the additional challenge of emotional trauma when considering what to pack up and what to throw out. Yes, for the pack rats among us, every move is an existential crisis, because our existence is so tied up with our sense of what we own. We pride ourselves on our choice possessions, treasuring them as extensions of our personalities that reflect our true selves in ways that confound simple verbal description. Our libraries of books half-read, our boxes of trophies old and dusty, even our collections of barely-seen antiques and heirlooms seem too dear to part with. How to overcome ourselves and get on with the very necessary and rudely immediate business of actually moving?

Of course, to various degrees, everyone has a pack rat in them somewhere that makes for accumulated stuff. It all piles up over the course of the months and years, and soon one marvels at all the money spent on this, that, and the other. Indeed, it may help to think of a move as a liberating experience, a chance at a new life, and by logical extension a new self perhaps to be defined by other possessions, other prizes. And what better way to welcome future treasures by selling off the fancies of yesteryear by holding a garage sale! It is a great way to finally meet one's neighbors and help finance the move. It can also be, dare I say, a rather spiritual experience (remember, it's all very liberating, as mentioned previously) as one determines what is truly necessary to life and what is one's true self. Just where does this possessive mentality come from?

It can't simply be blamed on our consumer culture. But whatever its genesis, you can stand with Alexander and cut through the Gordian knot of it all by simply selling your stuff. Be harsh and divide all things into two and only two categories, those that you would need on a deserted island and those which you wouldn't and would therefore offer for sale or generously donate.

One caveat: be sure to keep any bank statements and the like, in the Internal Revenue Service suddenly wants to get to know you better! The same can be said of utility bills, for proof of domicile and identity. Though we live in a digital world these days, a paper trail is still held in high esteem and might prove useful.
