Floor Standing Taps and Bathtubs for Traditional Roll Top Baths
by Robert Ratcliffe
Traditional roll top baths are such as a beautiful addition to any bathroom. These baths are designed so that there is a tap platform, a flattened part of the edge. Due to the curve of the top of roll top bath tubs, the tap platform is important since taps are mounted from the floor or the wall.
In addition to choosing a set of taps, you will need standpipes which are what the taps are mounted on. The standpipes and set of taps are usually sold separately. There are different types of standpipes. Make sure that the standpipes are specifically made for roll top baths. It should not include a shower bracket. Standpipes vary in size from 660 mm to 700 mm height. The 660 mm height is the most popular size because most bathtubs are 660 mm high from the floor to the top of the rim where the taps would be located. Measure the distance for your bathtub and get appropriately sized standpipe.
Purchasing a set of taps that works with the standpipes is the next step. Most contemporary taps will not work with the standpipes because they will not be adequate reach for the spout to get over the edge of the bath. The proper reach for taps when used with traditional roll top baths is 150 mm. Purchase a set of taps that is designated at deck mounting. Many of these taps offer ceramic disk technology and are very easy to use. One example is the ultra helix single lever taps; it is very functional yet quite stylish.
The bathtubs for traditional roll top baths vary in design and shape. It is the curvature in these bath furnishings that make them so unique and coveted. For example, the Excelsior model has a shine from a polished aluminum plinth that complements the white acrylic foundation. The shape is a charming double ended slipper bath. The Excelsior is also very comfortable with dimensions of 1780 mm length x 760 mm width x 685 mm height. Another favorite among roll top bathtubs is the Paris Bateau. This design was first introduced by Jacob Delafon of Paris around 1890. It is a stylish bathtub with chrome plated aluminum feet. The dimensions for the popular bathtub are 1770 mm length x 720 mm width x 770 height; it weighs 38 kg.
